LED backlit LCD HDTVs have become more and more common over the last year, especially with Samsung’s vast LED HDTV range.

But until now this LED backlit technology have remained exclusively in large HDTVs and portable devices such as laptops and netbooks. They are favored over standard CCFL backlights as they use less power and provide better colors.

Vizio have now taken the LED technology to their new Razor LED range of smaller LED LCD HDTVs.

The 23-inch Vizio VM230XVT and 19-inch Vizio VM190XVT both feature LED backlights for improved contrast and colors, along with very thin profiles. Both have a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and the larger 23-inch VM230XVT has a full HD / 1080p resolution.

Both models can also be used as a digital picture frame via the USB port. Both of the Vizio Razor LED HDTV range are very energy efficient, and beat the new Energy Star 3.0 ratings by over 50%.

The Vizio VM190XVT will cost $349 and the larger VM230XVT will be $399.

Sharp has introduced four new models of HDTV with LED backlight: the LC-52LE700UN by 52 inches, the LC-46LE700UN by 46 inches, the LC-40LE700UN 40-inch and LC-32LE700UN by 32 inches. Also announced were two other models, from 60 and 65-inch: the LC-60E77UN and LC-65E77UM.

All LE700 Series models are equipped with LED technology, the new X-Gen Panel, which should allow good quality of vision and depth of the blacks; UltraBrilliant LED technology instead should ensure brightness and contrast levels are extremely high, also Fine Motion Enhanced technology assures a response time of 4 ms.

LE700 Series models are Full HD 1080p resolution, their 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast is equal to the angle of vision is 176 degrees. Vizio to Stop Producing Plasma HDTVs
The discount TV maker will focus exclusively on LCD.

Washington, D.C. (February 11, 2009) -- Vizio says it has stopped producing Plasma High-Definition sets and will now concentrate entirely on its LCD series, according to the New York Times.

In an article published today, Vizio's co-founder, Laynie Newsome, told the newspaper that the company is nearly out of existing Plasma inventory, although it's still selling Plasma sets at its web site. And the low-cost TV maker has no plans to resume Plasma production.

Newsome explained the company's decision by saying that Plasma does not sell as well as LCD in part because its picture does not look as good in retail showrooms. Generally, Plasma sets look better in dark rooms while LCD sets fare better in well-lit rooms, such as electronics stores.

Vizio's decision is another blow to the Plasma HDTV which has lagged behind the LCD in sales over the past two years for a variety of reasons. Vizio has become a top seller of new TVs because of its lower prices and consumer-friendly promotions.

The Times notes that Vizio's departure leaves just three large-volume Plasma makers in the United States: market leader Panasonic, Samsung and LG Electronics.
